Data Sources
We gather data from: lender websites and published disclosures, CFPB complaint database, FDIC and NCUA databases for bank/credit union data, third-party rate aggregators (cross-referenced against primary sources), direct lender outreach for rate verification, and consumer review platforms.
Update Cadence
Ratings are reviewed quarterly at minimum. Rate data is reviewed monthly. When a lender makes material changes to their products — fee structure, eligibility criteria, rate ranges — we update their rating within 30 days of the change becoming public. Major regulatory actions (CFPB enforcement, state actions) trigger immediate review.
Products We Don't Review
We do not publish positive reviews for payday loans, predatory installment products (factor rates above 100% effective APR), rent-to-own financing, or products that primarily serve to extract value from financially vulnerable consumers. We cover these products for consumer education purposes but do not rate or recommend them.
